Heart Songs

For our last project of our second year in uni, we were allowed to write our own brief. I decided I was going to write mine on what's influenced me most since I've been in Swansea... music :)

I decided I'd produce a book of illustrations based on song lyrics from some of my favourite bands. After I realised the list of bands I'd been influenced by was stupidly long, I decided to cut it down to bands I'd actually seen in Swansea.

I did alot of research on the DIY scene/punk community. Jamie, Owen, Swansea Collective, El Ufo and Kerry Evans featured in my research so they deserve a shout out!

Cheap Girls
Her and Cigarettes
'She spends her money on cigarettes and such, well I love her and cigarettes so much.'
Collage/Coloured Pencils/Digital

Dividers
Brian Fallon Stole my Dress Sense
'
I used to have a friend called fate, he hates me now. Everytime I ask him round for drinks, he lets me down'
Acrylic/Coloured Pencils

Thekidisfireworks
Four Track Heroes
'These are my hands, these are my hands. They craft nothing.'
Pencils/Digital/Masking Fluid/Acrylic

Brothers
That's Gnarly
'You're so fucking happy with your 9 to 5, that you can't even see and you're barely alive.'
Pencil/Markers/Fineliners

Bangers
Banging
'You don't believe in one night stands, so let's get married then.'
Pencil/Digital/FineLiner

Lemuria
Lipstick
'When you wear lipstick, I always want to kiss you.
But you use your lipstick as an excuse not to kiss me.
You prefer to kiss me in the morning, when you have morning breath
or at noon, when you have coffee breath.'
Painting with coffee/Digital Collage

The Arteries
Cornelia Marie
'What would you do if I said you were a noose?
That you were an anchor I gotta cut loose.
Would you help me on my way?'
Pencil/FineLiner/Coloured Pencils/Digital

My faves are probably the cheap girls and tkif illustrations. I got my marks back for this project the other day...76, which is a first, which is fucking outstanding considering I wanted an extension and I wasn't given one! Happy girl!!!

'Make the next one better'

I was set a brief to illustrate a book cover for 'Perfume' by Patrick Suskind. This was a live brief as the competition was a real one that we could then submit our designs to. The book is odd. I thought my usual style didn't suit it so I tried something different. I used collage (which I'm awful at), digital (which I'm awful at) and had to put my graphic design skills to the test (which I'm awful at).

Needless to say I was unhappy with the outcome and didn't bother to enter the competition against the wishes of my tutor...

...it's been a long time

So, I have been a busy girl with uni and what not, but now I've just completed my second year I guess I have no excuses but to actually post some work on here!

Here's some work from first year that I never got round to uploading...

It's from a project where we were asked to pick a theme (I chose nursery rhymes) and experiment with different mediums. The ones featured here (I binned some of them as they are first year experimental piles of crap) are acrylic, chalk pastel, markers and watercolour.

They're not very good but they were all done in one or two nights as I was a lazy student!

Foxy

my favourite work to date :)

i had a similar project (identical actually) to the picture book elective previously mentioned. i was required to produce two double page spreads on a story of my choice or one of my own. so i wrote my own story.
i don't want to give much away online incase my idea gets stolen! but to cover these first few spreads, it's about a fox that finds a top hat in the forest.
i fully intend to complete this book in my own time. i plan to get it made on blurb.com and maybe one day get it published too :)

bolognese

we were set a project over summer to enter the Bologna Book Fair which is rather a big deal if your work gets selected. their system of selecting winners is confusing and random though, and they tend not to like 'typical/cute' children's book illustration styles...so i was screwed...here is my entry anyway haha

picture book elective

i was set a project to think of a story (didn't necessarily have to write one) and then to create two double page spreads of finished art work... as you can see i enjoyed the project so much i made three :) they're acrylic ink on watercolour paper for those interested.
